Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 is the supercharged version of Snapdragon 865+ | Mobile phone

THE Qualcomm presented, this Tuesday (19), the latest chip for mobile phones: Snapdragon 870. The novelty is a sort of middleware between the Snapdragon 865 and the company’s most powerful processor today, the Snapdragon 888.

This feature alone makes it clear that the Snapdragon 870 is geared towards high-performance mobile devices. In fact, this model will replace the Snapdragon 865+, the chip announced in the mid-2020s, and since then, it has been used primarily in gamer smartphones.

To do its job, the Snapdragon 870 has four 1.8 GHz Cortex-A55 cores for simple tasks and four Cortex-A77 cores for heavy processing. Of these, three are running at 2.4GHz and one operating at 3.2GHz.

The GPU is the Adreno 650 operating at 670 MHz, along with the Snapdragon 865+. For example, the component is compatible with OpenGL 3.2, Vulkan 1.1, and DirectX 12.

Artificial intelligence tasks are covered by Hexagon 698. Processor 698. For photos and videos, the Snapdragon 870 has a Spectra 480 image signal processor (ISP). This chip works with a sensor up to 200 megapixels or two up to 25 megapixels.

5G support is also present, thanks to the built-in Snapdragon X55 5G modem, which is compatible with both millimeter waves (mmWave) and frequencies below 6 GHz (below 6 GHz). Here, download and upload speeds are up to 7.5 Gb / s and 3 Gb / s, respectively.

Other features include 7-nanometer technology, plus support for Bluetooth 5.2, Wi-Fi 6, NFC, display up to 4K and 60 Hz, HDR10 + memory and up to 2.75 GHz LPDDR5 memory. .

For fast charging, Qualcomm’s new chip features Quick Charge 4+, a standard that only needs 15 minutes of charging for a 2,750 mAh battery to charge about 50%.

Note that these are quite similar features to the Snapdragon 865+. The main difference appears in frequencies: while the most powerful Cortex-A77 core of its kind has a frequency of 3.1GHz, in the Snapdragon 870 this component is higher than 100MHz.

The first phones powered by the Snapdragon 870 are expected to be announced in the first quarter of 2021. Motorola, Xiaomi, Oppo and OnePlus are among the brands that have prepared models based on novelty.
